Welcome Commissioners!
The 190th General Assembly of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church has among its tasks to discuss an updated “Statement on Human Sexuality” for the denomination. In light of this discussion, LGBTQIA+ members and former members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church were invited to share their stories in order to help commissioners know a few of those whom their decision will affect most directly.
On Monday, June 28th, Commissioner Rev. Joy Warren of Murfreesboro Presbytery submitted a resolution to bring these stories and other scriptural and theological resources before commissioners and the select committee considering the proposed “Statement on Human Sexuality.” Since LGBTQIA+ Cumberland Presbyterians will be among those most impacted by the Statement, we believe it is an ethical imperative to consider their stories and consider the recommended scriptural and theological resources.
According to the proposed Statement on Human Sexuality, as the body of Christ we are called to love one another and as an expression of that love to listen to each other, affirming the even greater common ground we enjoy and embrace as Cumberland Presbyterians. We believe that the select committee and General Assembly will want to do their due diligence, and we submit that these voices and resources need to be carefully considered so that these bodies can truly discern what is best for the church.
We respectfully request that you to consider as a part of your deliberations the following resources:

Whether or not we agree, it will be helpful that as members of the same body we come to a good understanding of one another’s views. These additional resources offer, in a general way, a more in-depth understanding of inclusionary and affirming views.
